In the recent past, Gucha Community has experienced a great drop out of school of a girl
child due to early pregnancies.
This has gradually build up until the recent witness of Five hundred girls dropping out
of Primary and secondary school
within one year. The great increase in such cases has been orchestrated by poverty which
has played a great role and
lack of civic education which concerning matters to do with sex is considered as an
abomination. It is a taboo to talk
to children about sexual matters. This kind of culture and tradition only leaves the
girl child in darkness not knowing
how to carry themselves around the community especially with their boy counterparts.
This kind of predicament has not
only made the educational life of a girl child difficult but also unbearable and almost
impossible. The area history has
shown that girls can do even better than boys if given chance and supported. This is
evident from the few ladies in
various Governmental departments serving in very high ranks and having great performance
records that stand out even
today.
Gucha Community Bases organization has a great program in regard to salvaging the
conditions and welfare of the girl
child. The CBO has partnered with the relevant partners and the Government and is now on
a ten year program to see to it
that the girl child has been jealously guarded in order to preserve the dignity and
image and also the relevance of the
girl child in our society today.
Gucha CBO has entered into a memorandum of understanding with all schools both private
and public to have the CBO carry
out seminars to all girls just to empower them with the information and skills on how to
protect themselves from early
pregnancies and also inform them of the very many good opportunities that lie ahead of
them should they successfully
complete their Education. In this program girls are also encouraged to be bold and
report any person trying to take
advantage of their vulnerability o that the law may quickly catch up with them. The CBO
has for last two years managed
to do counseling to 350 girls who have returned back to their schooling and some have
successfully completed their
fourth form Education and some have joined various careers.
The CBO is looking forward to reaching more schools within the region so as to reach
each and every girl. By the end of
the five years the CBO targets to reach 10,000 girls to ensure that by the end of the
day all girl who start their
school life completes their education an becomes a better person able to positively
contribute back to the society’
economy.
