HIV and AIDS was declared a national disaster in the year 1984.Since then there has been
a great campaign by the
government, NGOs and the Media on ways to pervert it.HIV and AIDS has resulted in
children becoming orphans, women and
men becoming widows and widowers respectively.HIV and AIDS is so rampant in Kisii County
let alone Gucha which is a
sub-county sue to the prevailing financial circumstances and poverty level.
Gucha Community Based Organization has HIV ANS AIDS as one of the main programs for the
people of Gucha Community. The
CBO with the help of the Health committee has been able to have the HIV AND AIDS program
run with a lot of ease. The
Health Committee does the preliminary work of gathering information concerning those
people living with HIV and AIDS and
then pass the information to the Community Health Workers who then strategize on how to
approach the patients for
purposes of reducing unnecessary resistance.
The CBO through the assistance of the Health committee, has assisted the CBO identify a
total of three hundred and fifty
(350) HIV AIDS patients who have fully accepted to be under the monitoring and
supervision of the CBO. The CBO takes
care of the patients from their own home by using a program that is famously known as
HOME BASED CARE where we have
Community Health Workers (CHWs) do regular home visits to monitor and assist the
patients and also give regular reports
on the conditions of the patients
Some of the care given to the patients includes among others; regular supply of food
such rice, beans, maize flour, well
treated mosquito nets and blankets. The main objective of this is to ensure that all
people living with HIV and AIDS
live a well sustained life and able to eat a balanced diet in order to boost their
immunity and also help them in
resisting any more advancement in the body.
The CBO currently works with a total number of 50 Community Health Workers (CHWs) who
work hand in hand with Home Based
Care givers (HBC) who are well trained on Home based care services to the people living
with HIV and AIDS.
