Gucha Community Based Organization has Environment, Health and sanitation as part of the
programs meant to benefit the
entire populace of Gucha and its environs. The CBO has embarked on Environment, Health
and sanitation as one of its
primary concern for the community which it considers more of a reward that it will leave
to the community when it may
face out of Gucha to set its base elsewhere. Gucha Community and like the larger Kisii
County, is face with the problem
of tapped water. Most of the homes do not have tapped water but instead people there
depend on water from moving rivers
and streams for drinking and domestic use which are located at far distances. This makes
women who are charged with the
responsibility of fetching water for the entire family use.
From the foregoing, it is evident that the people here only use pit latrines as opposed
to modern toilet that use
flashing. Now the pit latrines are dug by cheap laborers some of whom get injured in due
course following the use of
local equipment. Now the dug latrines are in most cases temporarily covered from sides
but the tops are left open
totally uncovered. This means that the toilets are best used during dry seasons but
unfortunately for Kisii region, rain
is on almost throughout the year. This then makes the toilets almost unuseful during wet
times. Most of those toilets
get damaged in a short time and lenders most of them to be in ruins and abandoned. So
sanitation is usually at stake
here and the CBO with the help of community members, have for the last one year embarked
on cleaning the environment and
taking care of sanitation.
In partnership with the ministry of Health especially Gucha sub-County Hospital, the CBO
has done a lot of cleanups and
tried to help the community to construct good temporary toilets using better materials
and also ensuring that the
toilets have a roof to avoid damage and safety of the person who uses it when raining.
Though the CBO lacks the modern
equipment which it is appealing to its main partners to assist provide, it has done its
level best to use all available
tools to have the environment cleaned, toilets constructed.
On Health matters, the CBO has had a great boost from Gucha sub-county Hospital which
has provided the CBO with a
reporting tool on the progress concerning matters to do with HIV and AIDS, early child
pregnancies, malaria and reports
on sanitation. The Hospital has really assisted the CBO with the necessary financial and
material support and this has
really seen the community improve so tremendously in terms of cleanliness, sanitation
and health care.
